‘My relationship with Virat Kohli is not for TRP’: Gautam Gambhir reacts to past rifts between them

New Delhi: Newly-appointed Indian men’s team head coach Gautam Gambhir has reacted to his relationship with senior player Virat Kohli and explained how the two of them will work going forward for the development of the Indian cricket.

Addressing his first press conference ahead of the Indian team departure for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, Gambhir was asked about his rift with Kohli as the duo have been involved in some of the infamous controversies in cricket even during their playing days and as recently as IPL 2023.

“My relationship with Virat Kohli is between the two mature individuals and not for TRP. We have had lots of discussions and everyone has the right fight for their jersey. But at the moment, we are representing India and 140 crore Indians. I am sure we are going to be on the same page and try and make India proud,” Gambhir responded to his relationship with Kohli.

“I share a very good relationship off the field and we will continue to do that. But to make it more public to ‘what kind of relationship’ (we have), I think its between two individuals,” the 42-year-old added.

Gambhir and Kohli were involved in a heated argument during the IPL match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023. This happened 10 years after the two were spotted charging against each other when they led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and RCB, respectively, in IPL 2013.

Numerous reports have suggested that Kohli informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he is ready to keep his conflicts aside and won’t let them hamper their professional relationship that eventually impacts the dressing room environment.

Virat Kohli part of SL ODIs

Virat Kohli will begin his stint under Gambhir’s watch during the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka scheduled between August 2 and 7 next month. Kohli won’t be part of the T20I squad after the player announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados last month.
