New Delhi: Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has lavished praise on Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, revealing how he was left in awe by the 17-year-old talented forward’s performance against Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-finals. Yamal, who is regarded as one of the best young footballers in the world at present, played a key role in Barcelona’s La Liga triumph this season.
Yamal was also in fine form for Barcelona in the Champions League, helping the club make it to the semi-finals, where they lost to Inter Milan to bow out of the competition. At a tender age of 17, Yamal has become one of the vital cogs in the Barcelona squad and many believe the Spanish youngster is destined to become one of the future greats for the club.
Despite Barcelona’s loss to Inter Milan in the semi-finals, Yamal was a silver lining for the Catalans, as he produced an impressive performance in both legs. Recalling his stellar show in the semi-finals against Simone Inzaghi’s men, Zidane said Yama’s performance against Inter was something he hasn’t seen in his life as he lauded the 17-year-old.
“When you see him play, for example, the semi-final against Inter Milan. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. Just watch someone who has such a command of his craft on the pitch. It’s fabulous to see him like that. We all had fun with him, and that’s why, for all these young players, Lamine is the one to watch,” said Zidane.
Barcelona set to tie down Lamine Yamal on a long-term contract
As he approaches his 18th birthday, Yamal is expected to sign a new long-term contract at Barcelona, which is set to keep him at the club till 2031. Barcelona have reportedly agreed terms with the teenage sensation, who will become one of the club’s best-paid players after signing the lucrative deal.
Yamal scored 18 goals and produced 25 assists for Barcelona across competitions in the 2024-25 season, helping the club win the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey, while reaching the semi-final of the Champions League. Yamal is also expected to take the legendary Lionel Messi’s no.10 shirt after signing his new Barcelona contract.
