Kanpur: India recorded an extraordinary victory on the fifth and the final day of the second Test in Kanpur to sweep the series 2-0. The victory extended India’s remarkable run at home to 18 successive series wins.
It was an extraordinary performance by the Indian team despite losing 235 overs of play with two days of complete wash-out. The stunning seven-wicket win consolidated India’s top spot in the ICC World Test Championship Table (WTC) with 74.24 percentage points.
Yashasvi Jaiswal once again shone the brightest among the star-studded batting line-up. The left-handed opener hit half-centuries in both innings to lead India’s extraordinary charge that left the visitors shellshocked.
After Indian bowlers opened a small window of opportunity by bundling the visitors out for 233 on Day 4, Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma launched an incredible onslaught to send a clear message to the Bangladeshis. India attacked the Bangla Tigers ruthlessly in search of what looked like an improbable win after two successive washout days.
The home side broke a plethora of batting records en route to 285 for 9d and with just a little over a day’s play left took a first-innings lead of 51 runs.
Barring Pant, all of the top and middle order batters contributed to India’s total with Jaiswal finishing as the top-scorer with 72 off 51 balls.
Bangladesh lost two wickets on Day 4 and eventually collapsed to 146 after resuming the day on 26 for two. Bumrah (3/17 in 10 overs), Ravichandran Ashwin (3/50 in 15 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/34 in 10 overs) were the chief destructors for India.
India chased down 95 runs in 17.2 overs with ‘Player Of The Match’ Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) notching up his second fifty of the match.
Jaiswal breaks 53-year-old record and continues remarkable run in 2024
Jaiswal’s remarkable run in Test cricket continued with twin half-centuries in Kanpur. He also notched up a fifty in the first innings of the first Test in Chennai. He has now scored 929 Test runs in 2024 which is the most by an India batter in a calendar year before turning 23. He broke a 53-year-old record by surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of 918 in 1971.
Jaiswal also became only the second Indian, after Virender Sehwag to notch up fifties in both innings with a strike rate of over 100.
Jaiswal’s overall stats are incredible. In 11 Tests, Jaiswal has scored 1217 runs at an average of 64.17 with the help of seven half-centuries and three centuries, including two double hundreds.
More than the stats, the maturity and calmness he has shown despite very little experience and young age, speaks a lot about his character and ability.
The 22-year-old has carried India’s batting in Tests this year with so much composure and maturity and looks destined to be an all-format talisman in the years to come.
