Villupuram: The counting of votes began for the by-election of the Vikravandi Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu on Saturday morning amid great expectations. “Counting of votes polled in in Vikravandi assembly constituency in TN commenced at 8am on Saturday. About 150 officials are engaged in the counting process and 1,219 cops have been deployed in and around the counting centre” a senior official from the Election Commission said.
As per the initial trends, DMK candidate Anniyur Siva is ahead of PMK candidate C Anbumani who was fielded on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). DMK leads in as of 9am. DMK’s Anniyur Siva polled 8,564 votes while PMK’s C Anbumani polled 3,096 votes and NTK’s Abinaya Ponnivalavan polled 438 votes.
Following the death of DMK’s Pugalendhi, who was the MLA of the Vikravandi constituency, a by-election was announced and polling was held on June 10.
A total of 29 candidates, including DMK’s Anniyur Siva, PMK’ C Anbumani, Abhinaya from Naam Tamilar Katchi, and 18 independents had contested the by-election. 82.48% votes polled in the by-election to Vikravandi Assembly constituency .
Elections in Vikravandi Assembly constituency
The Vikravandi Assembly Constituency which comes under Villupuram constituency was formed in 2011. The CPM won in the first election held in 2011. The DMK party won in 2016. But DMK MLA Radhamani who won in 2016 passed away before his tenure ends . Thus, in 2019, the first by-election was held for Vikravandi constituency. AIADMK’s Muthamich Selvam won the election. The DMK won here in the last Assmbly election held here in 2021.
