Wayanad : The landslides in Mundakkai and Chooral Mala has left the region devastated with 294 death reported with more than 250 missing till now. As per official sources, nearly 240 people are still missing from the region.
As per the preliminary findings, 348 houses have been damaged in the landslides. Of the seven bodies found on the day, four were recovered from Chooralmala and three from Mundakkai. The progress of search operations at Mundakkai and Punjirimattom, which were cut off following the collapse of the bridge at Chooralmala, had been slow for the past two days as excavators could not cross the river.
The opening of the Bailey bridge will facilitate transportation of heavy vehicles carrying necessary equipment to disaster-stricken areas. Around 250 Army personnel were deployed to build the bridge.
Besides this, the Coast Guard, Navy, and Forest Department will jointly conduct a search operation today focusing on the riverbanks and areas where bodies may be trapped, according to the rescue plan.
State Revenue Minister K Rajan, a day ago, had said that a drone-based radar from Delhi would arrive on Saturday to locate bodies buried in the mud.
