Why New Delhi Railway Station is not a Junction

New Delhi: New Delhi Railway Station is in the news because of the massive redevelopment program of the station which is expected to be started later this year. To ensure smooth movement of trains, Indian Railways will divert trains to nearby locations including Delhi Junction (DLI), popularly called as ‘Old Delhi Railway Station’, Anand Vihar Railway Station, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Cantt Railway Station, and Sarai Rohilla.

A railway station is designated a junction when three or more train routes converge or diverge for different destinations. New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) has only one route passing through it – Tilak Bridge-Shivaji Bridge-New Delhi-Sadar Bazar-Old Delhi Jn so it is not defined as Junction.

The Indian Railways’ Mathura Junction station has seven routes, the most of any station. Some of the examples are: Mathura Junction has the maximum routes among all the railway stations across India. While Mathura has 7 routes, Salem Junction has six routes Vijayawada Junction, five and Bareilly Junction has five routes.

New Delhi Railway Station redevelopment

New Delhi Railway Station is all set to get redeveloped on a large scale and will be equipped with modern amenities once built. To ensure smooth operation of trains, the Indian Railways will divert, regulate the trains as needed to accommodate the ongoing work.

The Ministry of Railways on Monday (May 27) released a statement stating that all necessary notifications regarding train diversions and regulations will be issued ahead of time to keep travelers informed. The ministry issued the statement following media reports about a temporary closure of NDLS for redevelopment work.

The Railway Ministry’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is aimed at modernising several railway stations across India, with New Delhi Railway Station one of them.

Several premium trains, including NDLS-Howrah Rajdhani Express and other Rajdhani trains connecting the capitals of states, New Delhi-Ayodhya Vande Bharat Express, Shatabdi Express, Duronto Express operate from New Delhi Railway Station.

A railway station is designated as Junction where railway lines to multiple destinations split off. Railway Junction needs at least three train lines going out of the station and trains that come into the station must have at least two outgoing train lines.  Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
