Women’s U19 World Cup: Gongadi Trisha’s determined knock helps India thrash Sri Lanka

New Delhi: India U19 women team crushed Sri Lanka U19 women team in a low-scoring match of the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup played at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on Thursday. This was the third straight win for the Niki Prasad-led side in the global event for the junior players.

India were invited to bat first after losing the toss. Opening batter Gongadi Trisha played a calculative knock to score the bulk of runs for the team, though she missed out on a half-century. She was dismissed on 49 after getting caught by Sanjana Kavindi off Manudi Nanayakkara’s bowling in the 14th over.

The knock was commendable given that it came on a spiteful wicket where the other batters from both ends struggle to connect the ball neatly. Trisha’s knock turned out to be the difference of the match as India posted 118 for nine in the first innings. The total was very powerful for their bowlers as Sri Lanka were held for 58 for nine.

Indian bowlers control Sri Lanka’s chase

The pace duo of VJ Joshitha (2 for 17) and Shabnam Shakil (2 for 9) ran through the top order of Sri Lanka with five wickets falling in the powerplay overs. Left-arm spinner Parunika Sisodia (2 for 7) was introduced to make life difficult for the opposition.

Parunika lured Rashmika Sewwandi, who was settled in at 15, to play the big shot and go after the attack. Rahmika’s dismissal meant Sri Lanka couldn’t have any player to stage their fightback in the game, and the tail surrendered. Rashmika was the only player from Sri Lanka to muster a double-digit score.

Ayushik Shukla and Vaishnavi Sharma picked up a wicket each as Sri Lanka were reduced 49 for nine, pulverising them even before the final over was bowled.

With the commanding win, India have entered the Super Six after winning all three of their Group A fixtures.
