Chennai: Customs officials searched a top Airports Authority of India (AAI) official from Chennai for his alleged role in the 267 kg gold smuggling case through the gift shop Airhub, at Chennai Airport, a front for the Sri Lankan syndicate. The investigation has found that Selvanayagam, the JGM of Chennai airport had allegedly lobbied on behalf of Youtuber Sabir Ali, who got the shop despite no financial wherewithal two officials of Vidvedaa PRG, the retail concessionaire, of the Chennai International Airport.
Chennai Youtuber with no prior retail experience was hired and financed by a Sri Lankan gold smuggling syndicate in Abu Dhabi to rent a shop in Chennai Airport to smuggle 267 kg gold worth Rs 167 crore.
The Youtuber Sabir Ali and his seven employees earned a commission of around Rs 3 crores in 2 months from the gold smuggling syndicate for helping them. The Chennai customs has found that in its investigation.
The nexus employs Sri Lankan transit passengers and staff at the Chennai airport to smuggle out gold.
