New Delhi: The Himalayas in India stretch from almost 1,400 miles and nearly touch the skies at an elevation of approximately 6,100 metres. From Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres) and Mt Everest (8,848 metres) to Kanchenjunga (8,586 metres), the Himalayas are home to some of the tallest peaks in the world. Not just the tallest mountains, but the Himalayas have a rich flora and fauna, and this makes it more special. Some exotic animals, such as mammals and reptiles, are found in the Himalayas, but a few are endangered.
Snow leopards, brown bears, lesser pandas, and Tibetan yaks are found in the Himalayas’ remote sections and higher elevations, but their numbers are limited. The yak has been domesticated and is used as a beast of burden in Ladakh.
The birds of the Himalayas are equally rich, but they are more abundant in the east than in the west. Let us look at animals found in the Himalayas.
