‘DMK would not have won a single seat if AIADMK-BJP alliance had existed’: Tamilisai Soundararajan

Chennai: Senior BJP leader and former Governor of Telangana, Tamilisai Soundararajan opinined that DMK would not have won a single seat if the AIADMK-BJP alliance had existed in the 2024 Lok sabha polls.

“If we had an alliance with AIADMK, DMK would have won these many seats today. Alliance is a political strategy. The DMK has used that strategy in Tamil Nadu and this reality must be acknowledged, Tamilisai said after her party faced the worst defeat in Tamil Nadu in the 2024 general elections. The saffron party lost all the 19 seats it contested in the state and the ruling DMK party which had a clean sweep of 40 out of 40 seats including the lone seat Puducherry this time.

Tamilisai’s remarks come after senior AIADMK leader SP Velumani commented “If the pact between AIADMK and BJP had continued, the front would have won 30-35 seats in Tamil Nadu. The alliance could not happen because of Annamalai.”

Reacting to his comments, Tamilisai said “Velumani has expressed his opinion that Annamalai is the reason for the ADMK-BJP split. We are not second to none—those who can succeed. DMK would not have won if the votes of all the alliance parties were combined. But I can’t entirely agree that alliances bring down the party. We formulated an alliance strategy. But Annamalai is not interested in it.”

The former state BJP president said “I will give whatever respect is due to the head of the state. I was also the head of the state. At the same time, I don’t hesitate to say what I think. There is democracy in the party for that. Even Annamalai and ADMK members say they would have won if they had allied.”

Meanwhile, Annamalai said that had AIADMK and BJP allied, they would have won 30-31 seats out of 39. But we got 11% vote share which is a major development.”
